Re-roofing a house

Re-roofing means stripping the old tiles or slates, checking the timbers, and laying a new breathable membrane, battens and covering. It is the time to fix whatever the old roof has been hiding.

Where the roof has to stay open for a while, a temporary scaffold roof keeps the house dry underneath.

Tiles or slate

Concrete tiles, clay tiles and natural slate each look different and weigh different amounts, and a heavier covering can mean the roof timbers need checking first. In a conservation area the covering may have to match what is there.

Pitched roofing on extensions and new builds

On a new build or a two storey extension, the roof goes up as part of the build, from the timbers to the last ridge tile, to the same drawings as everything below it.
